Definition & Explanation
A gate pass is the document or digital record that a truck driver or collector presents at the terminal gate to prove authorization to pick up or deliver a specific container. Customs brokers or forwarders issue the gate pass only once customs release, carrier release and any outstanding fees have been cleared. If the gate pass is missing, or its issuance is delayed or withheld — for example during an organized work stoppage by customs brokers — the truck cannot pass the terminal gate, delaying pickups and empty container returns.
