A first notification of reefer cargo damage is the formal report submitted to the carrier, shipper, and insurer when temperature-controlled goods arrive damaged, spoiled, or outside the agreed temperature or humidity parameters. It records the nature, extent, timing, and suspected cause of the loss, and is the prerequisite for pursuing liability and insurance claims. Prompt filing after arrival is essential: contractual notice periods are typically short, and failure to meet them can result in forfeiture of claims and loss of evidence. In practice, the notification is supported by data logger records from the reefer unit, inspection photographs, and where applicable a surveyor's report. It is distinct from the final damage assessment, which follows a full review of all documentation.
