The purpose of an external customs value correction is to bring the declared customs value into line with applicable valuation rules, based on the intervention of a party outside the importing company. That party may be a customs authority acting during an audit, a licensed customs broker, or an independent reviewer. The correction is initiated either because errors in the original valuation have been identified or because information unavailable at the time of entry—such as royalties, transfer pricing adjustments, or undisclosed cost elements—has since come to light. Unlike an internal correction, an external customs value correction carries direct legal consequences: it can result in additional duty and import tax assessments, default interest, and in repeated cases, penalties. Companies with regular import activity should therefore maintain internal controls to detect valuation issues before they become subject to external scrutiny.
