As of June 2026. The U.S. copper tariffs were introduced by Presidential Proclamation 10962 of 30 July 2025 under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act and, since 1 August 2025, impose a 50% additional duty on semi-finished copper products (pipes, wires, rods, sheets) and copper-intensive derivative products (pipe fittings, cables, connectors, electrical components). Refined copper — ores, concentrates, anodes and cathodes — and copper scrap remain duty-free for now as feedstock; a phased universal duty on refined copper (15% from 1 January 2027, 30% from 1 January 2028) has been announced but is not yet in force. Under Proclamation 11021 (effective 6 April 2026) the tariff applies to the full customs value rather than only the copper content: 50% on articles made almost entirely of copper (HTS chapter 74), 25% on other copper-containing derivatives, and a reduced 10% for goods made from copper smelted and cast in the United States. The Section 232 tariffs on steel, aluminum and copper do not stack with one another. Not to be confused with the steel and aluminum tariffs (separate Proclamations 9704/9705), reciprocal tariffs or anti-dumping duties. Since April 2026 importers must report the country in which the copper was smelted and cast.
