Unlike a general-cargo port handling mixed freight, a container terminal is purpose-built exclusively for ISO-standard containers. The term covers seaport terminals—where vessels berth and are served by ship-to-shore cranes—as well as inland container depots and intermodal rail terminals in the hinterland. Core operations include discharging and loading vessels, transferring containers between ship, rail, and road, and staging boxes in the yard pending onward movement. When a container has to be moved between two terminals or depots within the same port, this is known as an inter-terminal transfer. Major seaport terminals process thousands of TEU per day, relying increasingly on automated stacking cranes and remote-controlled yard equipment. For freight forwarders and shippers, a terminal's throughput capacity and schedule reliability directly shape transit times and delivery performance.
