Consignment consolidation logistics is the practice of combining small shipments from multiple shippers into a single transport unit to reduce freight costs and maximize load utilization. A freight forwarder collects individual consignments at a consolidation point, merges them into one shared load, and moves them together to the destination region, where the cargo is deconsolidated and delivered separately to each consignee. This is the foundation of LCL (less than container load) ocean freight and groupage road transport. Transit times run longer than for direct shipments due to the collection and break-bulk steps, but on low-volume cargo the cost savings are substantial. Consolidation differs from simple transshipment, where cargo changes vehicles without being merged with freight from other shippers.
