CE Marking

The CE marking is the sign by which a manufacturer declares that its product complies with all applicable EU harmonisation legislation; the legal basis is Regulation (EC) No 765/2008. It is a precondition for placing regulated goods such as toys, electronics, machinery or medical devices on the EU single market. The CE marking is neither a quality label nor an indication of origin, but a declaration of conformity in symbol form for which the manufacturer alone bears responsibility. For freight forwarders and customs declarants it is highly relevant at import: if the marking is missing or forged — a classic field of counterfeiting — customs and market surveillance authorities can stop, test or reject consignments. Importers should therefore check conformity documents before shipment. Not to be confused with voluntary test marks such as the German GS mark or the deceptively similar "China Export" sign.
