Definition & Explanation
Packaging compliance certification ensures that containers, drums, boxes, and inner packaging intended for dangerous goods have passed the mandatory testing required before they can legally enter the transport chain. Accredited laboratories subject packaging to pressure, drop, and leakage tests in accordance with the UN Model Regulations, the IMDG Code, IATA DGR, or ADR, and issue a formal test certificate that authorises the UN specification mark printed on the packaging. Shippers and freight forwarders must be able to produce this certificate on demand; without it, carriers may reject the consignment and regulators may impose fines. Unlike dangerous goods shipment certification, packaging compliance certification applies to the container design itself, independent of any specific content or consignment.
