Cartonization solves a precise packing problem: given a set of items in an order, which box size minimizes void fill, freight cost, and material use while still protecting the contents? The process applies rules or algorithms – typically embedded in a WMS or OMS – to select the best-fit carton for each shipment before it reaches the packing station. Because most carriers charge on dimensional weight, choosing a carton that is even slightly oversized can meaningfully inflate freight costs at scale. Cartonization is therefore both a cost-control and a sustainability tool, reducing corrugated consumption alongside transport spend. It should not be confused with packaging automation, which handles the physical act of forming or sealing the box – cartonization is the upstream decisioning layer.
