Before a freight broker tenders a load to an unfamiliar trucking company, it checks whether that carrier can be trusted — a process known as carrier vetting. The review covers the company's legal existence and status, valid operating authority and licences, the limits and validity of its cargo liability and motor carrier insurance, safety and accident records, and its payment and performance history. The purpose is to prevent cargo theft through identity fraud, so-called double brokering, and liability gaps that surface only after a claim. Specialist providers and transport management platforms now automate much of this checking and monitor insurance and authority status continuously rather than once at contract signing. Carrier vetting should be distinguished from carrier onboarding: vetting is the upstream risk assessment, onboarding the subsequent admission into the carrier base.
