A bulk terminal is a specialised port facility for handling unpackaged bulk cargo such as grain, soybeans, coal, iron ore, fertiliser or liquid bulk. Unlike a container terminal, it works with conveyor belts, suction and grab cranes, silos and pipelines instead of ISO containers; the goods are conveyed, weighed and stored loose. Large export ports such as Santos operate separate bulk and container terminals, because loading processes, storage and dust control differ fundamentally. For shippers of agricultural and raw-material freight, the draught, handling rate and hinterland connection of the bulk terminal directly determine waiting times and freight costs. Performance depends heavily on silo capacity and rail access, as bulk cargo is rarely stored temporarily but moved on quickly. As part of the port infrastructure, it is closely tied to terminal operations and the port's concession model. Not to be confused with the container terminal, which handles standardised loading units, or with the general term bulk cargo, which denotes the goods themselves.
