As soon as a barge is loaded, stability and cargo management becomes critical: weight must be distributed across bow, stern, and both sides so that trim is correct and the vessel shows neither excessive heel nor a draught exceeding the permitted depth for the waterway. Masters calculate the combined centre of gravity, adjust ballast tanks to correct list and trim, and observe the depth and air draught restrictions specific to the river or canal in question. Hazardous goods are placed according to applicable stowage and segregation rules. Errors in load planning can lead to grounding in low-water conditions, excessive rolling, or—in the worst case—capsizing, with serious consequences for crew, cargo, and the environment. Stability management is therefore both an operational responsibility and a regulatory obligation for inland waterway masters.
