It denotes the force transmitted to the road surface by a single vehicle axle. On articulated lorries and multi-axle combinations, each axle is assessed individually, since load distribution varies with cargo placement, centre of gravity, and axle spacing. Legal limits – which differ by country and road category – protect infrastructure from accelerated wear; violations attract fines, prohibition orders, and liability for road damage. Axle load should not be confused with gross vehicle weight, which caps the combined load across all axles of a vehicle.
