Unlike generic tariff nomenclatures, the Australian Customs Tariff is the legally binding schedule administered by the Australian Border Force, listing duty rates, levies, and preferential arrangements for every product classification under the Harmonized System (HS). For each HS code, the tariff specifies whether the general MFN rate, a transitional rate, or a preferential rate under a bilateral or regional trade agreement applies. Correct tariff classification is the first and decisive step in any Australian import: it determines the actual duty liability and therefore directly affects landed costs.
