Definition & Explanation

An attempted delivery is recorded when a carrier or courier transports a shipment to the consignee's address but cannot complete the handover – typically because the recipient is absent, the premises are inaccessible, or required documentation is missing. The carrier logs the date, time, and reason for the failed attempt in the tracking system, making the record visible to both shipper and consignee. In parcel and express logistics, attempted delivery is a standard shipment event; common follow-up actions include a second delivery attempt, deposit at a local pickup point, or return to the sender after a defined holding period. Not to be confused with an attempted pickup, where the carrier fails to collect a consignment from the shipper. The logged record also serves as evidence in disputes between carriers and their clients.
