Definition & Explanation
Anti-static cargo packaging enters the picture whenever electrostatic discharge (ESD) poses a credible risk to goods in transit – most commonly semiconductors, printed circuit boards, optical components, and medical devices. Materials such as conductive foam inserts, dissipative plastic bags and trays, and anti-static stretch film either drain accumulated charges or prevent them from building up in the first place. The IEC 61340 series is the recognized benchmark for surface resistivity and charge dissipation; compliance is frequently required by contract in high-value electronics supply chains. Air cargo carriers routinely request documented proof of ESD-safe packaging for sensitive shipments, and non-compliant packaging can void component warranties or result in denied insurance claims. The term refers specifically to protective wrapping and containment materials – not to the handling procedures and equipment used at loading docks.
