Unlike conventional cargo logistics, animal transport logistics must integrate live animal welfare into every stage of planning and execution. Ventilated and climate-controlled compartments, mandatory rest, watering, and feeding intervals, and active stress-reduction measures are all legal requirements, not optional add-ons. In the EU, Regulation (EC) No 1/2005 sets the binding framework for commercial live animal transport; CITES provisions apply additionally when trading certain species with third countries. Carriers require specific authorisations and drivers must hold recognised competence certificates. The administrative burden—spanning transport authorisations, journey logs, and veterinary inspections—substantially exceeds that of comparable goods transport.
