Automated container terminals differ from conventional port facilities in one fundamental way: manual labour and traditional quay cranes are replaced by automated guided vehicles (AGVs), remote-controlled or fully automated ship-to-shore cranes, and terminal operating systems that orchestrate every container move in real time.
