Finished vehicle logistics covers every transport, handling and processing step between the manufacturer's factory gate and delivery to the dealer or end customer: movement of finished vehicles by rail, barge, ocean vessel and truck, interim storage at terminals, and technical services such as final inspection, washing, paint repair, retrofitting and delivery preparation. It differs from automotive parts logistics, which feeds components into production — here the vehicle itself is the cargo and at the same time a sensitive retail good, which makes damage rates, dwell time and traceability the governing metrics. As the share of electric vehicles grows, state-of-charge management, battery handling and specific parking-area requirements are added to the scope.
