Port of Chittagong Expands Terminal Capacities and Embraces RFID
Bangladesh continues to invest in its maritime infrastructure. The Port of Chittagong has extended its daily terminal hours by four hours as of January 2026. Simultaneously, a comprehensive RFID tracking system has been implemented at the Inland Container Depot Dhaka.
By extending operating hours, the port authority is responding to increased container traffic and growing export pressure from the textile industry. Longer gate opening hours improve slot availability for forwarders and reduce waiting times in congestion.
The new RFID system at ICD Dhaka enables nearly seamless shipment tracking. Container movements are automatically recorded and integrated into the Terminal Operating System. According to operators, the average search time for containers has decreased by up to 95 percent. This speeds up the processing time and increases handling capacity.
This is an important step for the supply chain in Bangladesh. Chittagong is regarded as the central export hub of the country. More efficient processes enhance the predictability of pre-carriage, main carriage, and post-carriage. Stable port logistics are crucial, especially for time-sensitive shipments heading to Europe and North America.
A closer logistics network is also emerging in conjunction with Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport Dhaka. Air freight and sea freight are better coordinated, particularly in multimodal transport chains.
The modernization strengthens the competitiveness of the location in regional comparison. Emerging markets are increasingly investing in digital infrastructure to meet international quality standards.
