A terminal is a purpose-built facility where cargo transfers between transport modesâvessel, truck, rail, or aircraftâand is briefly staged before continuing its journey. Container terminals at seaports operate ship-to-shore gantry cranes, straddle carriers, and automated stacking systems; air cargo terminals handle the interface between aircraft holds and road feeders; inland terminals, often called dry ports or intermodal hubs, extend a port's reach deep into the hinterland. Terminal operators balance equipment deployment, yard management, and gate logistics to keep dwell time to a minimum. The essential distinction from a warehouse: cargo moves through a terminal, it does not reside there. For wheeled cargo such as vehicles and trailers, specialised Ro-Ro terminals use drive-on ramps instead of cranes.
