DB Cargo continues its restructuring. Now the company's British operations are also under review: DB Cargo UK is officially seeking a new owner.
The company has confirmed that legal and financial advisors have been engaged to find a buyer. According to Sky News, DB Cargo UK is working with consulting firm Interpath on this matter. Discussions with potential interested parties are already underway. However, no buyer has been named to date.
The main reason lies in the new strategic direction of the German parent company. DB Cargo AG intends to focus more strongly on its core business in Central Europe. Extensive restructuring is already underway there. This is partly due to the German state aid for DB Cargo approved by the EU Commission in 2024, which was tied to a restructuring plan.
DB Cargo UK is not a small peripheral subsidiary. According to its own information, the company employs approximately 2,200 employees and operates a fleet of 228 diesel and electric locomotives. The company offers freight train services within Great Britain as well as connections to mainland Europe through the Channel Tunnel.
For customers, nothing changes for now. DB Cargo UK emphasizes that operations will continue normally during the sales process. It will only become interesting once a buyer is identified, to see what strategy the new owner will pursue and whether networks, connections, or services will change.
For European rail freight transport, the move is nonetheless remarkable. Deutsche Bahn is thereby narrowing the scope of its own freight transport business and concentrating capital and management more strongly on Central Europe.
