The Fiji Sugar Corporation runs Malau as a dedicated export outlet for the sugar it processes at nearby Labasa, on the north-western coast of Vanua Levu. This is a bulk and tanker terminal rather than a container port: raw sugar, molasses and petroleum products account for the traffic. A purpose-built berth is equipped with a conveyor and bulk loader, backed by a large sugar storage shed and three molasses tanks, while an approach trestle of about 175 metres carries vessels to a depth of roughly 11.5 metres below chart datum. Throughput is in the order of 140,000 tonnes a year, concentrated in the crushing season. Although privately owned by the corporation, the facility operates under the jurisdiction of Fiji Ports Corporation. Forwarders moving containers or general cargo to Vanua Levu should route via Suva or Lautoka.
