Wind turbine transport stands apart from standard machinery haulage because the components of modern wind energy installations – rotor blades stretching 40 to over 80 metres, tower sections, nacelles, and generators – exceed the capacity of conventional vehicles in both length and weight. Rotor blades travel on purpose-built extendable trailers with steerable axles; blade lifters or articulated systems handle tight bends that would otherwise be impassable. Before any movement, engineers and logistics planners work through a route approval process that checks bridge load ratings, turning radii, and overhead clearances through both desk analysis and physical survey. Special transport permits, police escorts, and narrow time windows – typically overnight or in the early morning hours – are standard practice. For onshore wind farms, components frequently flow through port hubs or inland consolidation points before being called off to site; for offshore projects, handover takes place at dedicated heavy-lift terminals for installation vessels.
