Definition & Explanation
Warehouse replenishment is the internal process of moving goods from bulk or reserve storage to forward-picking locations so that order fulfillment can continue without interruption. When a picking zone runs low, a replenishment task is triggered—either by warehouse staff or automatically by a warehouse management system (WMS)—and pallets or cartons are transferred from deep storage to picking stations. Automated solutions such as automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS) or sortation equipment handle this movement dynamically, adjusting frequency to match order demand. Delayed or poorly managed replenishment is one of the most common causes of fulfillment bottlenecks. Unlike inbound restocking, which brings goods into the warehouse from suppliers, replenishment occurs entirely within the facility.
