When a shipment clears customs, import VAT would ordinarily be due on the spot – a VAT deferment account solves that cash-flow problem for approved importers. Instead of paying at the border for each consignment, the importer posts the VAT liability to a dedicated account held with the customs authority, then settles the accumulated balance through the next periodic VAT return. The account must be backed by a bank guarantee or equivalent financial security.
