In customs and tax practice, the VAT base is the amount on which the applicable VAT rate is applied to determine the tax due. It typically consists of the net value of the supply or service, plus ancillary charges such as freight, insurance, and handling fees, minus any recognised exemptions or discounts. For imports, freight forwarders and customs declarants calculate the base from the invoice value plus documented additional costs to the destination. An incorrect figure leads directly to tax miscalculations and can trigger subsequent assessments or penalties. The VAT base should not be confused with the customs value, which is determined under separate valuation rules and serves as the basis for duties rather than VAT.
