Definition & Explanation
The term truck cartel refers to the price-fixing arrangement among several European truck manufacturers established by the European Commission in 2016 and 2017. MAN, Daimler (today Mercedes-Benz Group), Volvo/Renault, Iveco and DAF coordinated gross list prices and the cost of new emissions technology between 1997 and 2011; Scania was fined separately in 2017. The Commission's fines totalled around EUR 3.8 billion. Buyers of trucks from that period can claim civil damages for the cartel-related price markup, which courts typically quantify as a percentage of the net price.
