Unlike tolling, which merely pauses the limitation clock, interruption of the statute of limitations resets the period entirely: previously elapsed time is forfeited and a fresh, full period begins from zero. Interruption is triggered by specific legal acts – a written notice of loss duly served on the carrier, the debtor's express acknowledgment of the claim, the filing of a lawsuit, or a formal demand procedure. In international carriage, a properly documented and verifiably delivered loss notification achieves interruption; an informal or verbal complaint does not. The practical consequences for logistics operators are severe: a notice served late, in the wrong form, or to the wrong addressee can permanently extinguish an otherwise valid claim. The distinction between interruption and tolling is therefore far from academic – it can determine whether a cargo claim survives at all.
