Tariff master data are structured reference datasets stored in transport management systems (TMS) that define all parameters for automated freight rate calculation: base rates by lane, weight and volume brackets, surcharges and discounts, validity periods, and mappings to tariff classes, customer segments, or contract groups. Freight forwarders and logistics providers rely on this data for quotation generation, order processing, and invoicing. Data quality directly determines billing accuracy: outdated tariffs cause miscalculations that either erode margin or require contract renegotiation. Regular maintenance—particularly after carrier rate adjustments, fuel surcharge revisions, or contract renewals—is therefore a core operational process. Unlike transactional booking records, tariff master data are reusable reference records managed through defined versioning cycles.
