However, practice often brings additional expenses not covered in the base tariff. Surcharges are supplementary fees that carriers add to the freight bill to cover special costs—hazardous goods handling, excess weight, inconvenient loading/unloading times, fuel surcharges (to offset fuel price volatility), or currency fluctuations.
