The Shipper's Declaration for Dangerous Goods is the mandatory document required before an airline or freight forwarder may accept a dangerous goods consignment for air transport. It records the proper shipping name, UN number, hazard class, packing group, quantity, and handling instructions, and constitutes the shipper's legal certification that the goods are correctly classified, packaged, and labelled in accordance with IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations. Any inaccuracy – a misquoted UN number, a missing packing group – is sufficient grounds for the airline to refuse the shipment outright. Unlike road transport hazard documentation, this declaration is specific to air carriage and must be completed in a prescribed format. Freight forwarders routinely verify the declaration before tendering cargo to the carrier.
