Shipment unit evaluation is the procedure for determining the billable weight of a consignment under the freight carrier's standard conditions. The actual gross weight is compared with the volumetric weight (calculated from length × width × height divided by a conversion factor, typically 5000 or 6000 cubic centimetres per kilogram). The carrier invoices based on whichever is higher—protecting against unprofitable transport of lightweight but bulky cargo. This evaluation method is specified in the carrier's general terms and conditions or in individual transport contracts.
