Unlike primary aluminum smelted from bauxite, secondary aluminum refers to recycled aluminum derived from scrap and residual materials. Section 232 of U.S. trade law extends to this category as well: the President may impose import tariffs on secondary aluminum when imports are deemed a threat to national security. Importers must clearly distinguish between the two aluminum types in customs filings, as secondary aluminum carries its own tariff classification numbers and potentially different duty rates.
