Common causes include common surnames or place names shared with sanctioned parties, imprecise fuzzy-matching logic, and incomplete data fields such as missing dates of birth or addresses. False positives consume significant compliance resources: each alert requires manual review, documentation, and internal escalation before a shipment can proceed, creating delays in day-to-day operations. They do not, however, pose a direct compliance risk in themselves – that risk lies with false negatives, where an actually sanctioned party passes undetected.
