In customs risk analysis, an authority uses the available shipment data – such as the description of goods, consignor, consignee, route and the track record of the parties involved – to assess whether a consignment poses a risk to revenue, security or compliance with prohibitions and restrictions.

In customs risk analysis, an authority uses the available shipment data – such as the description of goods, consignor, consignee, route and the track record of the parties involved – to assess whether a consignment poses a risk to revenue, security or compliance with prohibitions and restrictions. The result determines whether the consignment is released without inspection, subjected to a documentary check or physically examined. Because very large numbers of consignments cross borders every day, customs administrations target their controls; in the EU, for example, on the basis of common risk criteria under the Customs Risk Management Framework (CRMF). If the data are available before the goods arrive, the analysis can take place in advance. For freight forwarders, incomplete or inconsistent information increases the likelihood of an inspection and therefore of waiting times. Not to be confused with a company's own operational risk analysis, for example of transport routes or suppliers.
