Railway undertakings must hold a valid RID Safety Certificate before they may transport dangerous goods by rail. The certificate confirms that the company operates an audited safety management system covering organisational structures, emergency response procedures, staff training, and the maintenance of rolling stock. It is issued by the competent national authority following inspection and audit, and must be renewed periodically. The RID (Regulations concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Rail) forms Appendix C of the COTIF Convention and sets out the requirements against which operators are assessed. Carrying dangerous goods without this certificate constitutes a serious regulatory breach and can result in immediate suspension of operating rights.
