Definition & Explanation
A renewable fuel is produced from biogenic or other non-fossil feedstocks – such as used cooking oils, animal fats or vegetable oils – and replaces fossil diesel partially or entirely. Examples in transport and port operations include HVO100 for ship and truck engines. What matters for the climate impact is the full life-cycle view (production and use), not only tailpipe emissions, as well as the certified origin of the feedstock used. Renewable fuels can often be used in existing engines without technical modifications, but typically cost more than conventional fossil diesel.
