Definition & Explanation
A Quality Management System (QMS) in freight transport is a documented framework defining how transport processes are planned, executed, monitored, and improved to consistently meet customer requirements and regulatory obligations. It covers policies on vehicle maintenance, staff training, claims handling, subcontractor management, and key performance indicators. A certified QMS provides verifiable evidence of controlled operations to shippers, customs authorities, and auditors; sectors including pharma, automotive, and food routinely require QMS certification as a contract prerequisite. ISO 9001 is the most widely used certification standard, with sector-specific extensions such as GDP for pharmaceutical distribution and SQAS for chemical logistics building on its foundation. Unlike a pure safety management system, a QMS addresses overall process quality across the entire service cycle, from order intake to document archiving.
