When a manufacturer orders raw materials and the supplier ships them, procurement logistics governs everything that happens in between. It manages the physical and informational flow of materials from supplier to production facility, covering inbound transport, transhipment, warehousing, and inventory control. The central aim is to deliver the right quantity to the right place at the right time – at minimum cost and without disrupting production schedules. Unlike strategic procurement, which handles supplier selection and contract negotiation, procurement logistics focuses on operational execution: booking freight, tracking inbound shipments, and coordinating customs clearance. In just-in-time environments, even minor delays can halt an entire production line.
