Port State Control is the inspection regime by a port state authority of foreign ships visiting its ports or passing through its territorial waters to verify compliance with international standards and conventions (e.g., SOLAS, MARPOL, MLC), assessing vessel safety, environmental protection, and crewing conditions, and taking enforcement action if necessary.
