When port planners and risk analysts evaluate how well a hub can withstand and recover from disruption, they are assessing port resilience. The concept covers a port's capacity to absorb shocks—hurricanes, floods, equipment failures, labour strikes, cyberattacks, or broader supply chain interruptions—and to restore normal operations as quickly as possible. Resilient ports build in redundancy: multiple cranes per berth, backup power systems, alternative gate access, and pre-defined recovery protocols. Shipping lines and shippers increasingly factor resilience into hub and transshipment port selection, particularly in climate-exposed or geopolitically sensitive regions. The concept is distinct from port performance, which measures efficiency under normal conditions; resilience specifically addresses behaviour under stress.
