When an agreed delivery date is not met, a late delivery penalty may apply: a contractually defined financial charge or compensation owed to the receiver. This sanction incentivizes the shipper or logistics provider to maintain timeliness and compensates the recipient for damages caused by delay (e.g. inventory opportunity costs, production downtime, contractual penalties to third parties). In freight forwarding and transport, this is standard practice: penalty clauses often define a grace period (e.g. 24 or 48 hours) followed by daily or weekly charges, frequently capped at a percentage of transport fees (e.g. max. 10 % of freight charges). In cases of extreme delay, a right to terminate the contract may be triggered.
