Pallet return is the logistics process by which empty or used pallets are collected from the consignee after unloading and transported back to the consignor or a pool operator. Returned units go through an incoming inspection: damaged or worn pallets are repaired or culled before re-entering circulation. Under exchange systems—such as the EPAL scheme—the consignee hands an equivalent pallet directly to the driver at point of delivery, significantly cutting the administrative and transport burden of the return process. When returns stall, shortages and additional costs from pallet purchases or pool fees accumulate quickly. Unlike single-use pallets, the return process is predicated on a reusable-pallet strategy.
