Definition & Explanation
Pallet freight refers to the transport of goods loaded on pallets as standardised load units – typically Euro pallets measuring 120 × 80 centimetres. In the less-than-truckload business, specialised pallet networks have emerged: partner hauliers collect pallets in their region, move them overnight to a central hub and deliver them to the destination area on the next or second day. Charges are usually calculated per pallet by size and weight band rather than by kilogram or loading metre, which makes handling and pricing simpler and more predictable than general groupage. Not to be confused with pallet exchange, which governs the return or replacement of empty load carriers.
