Pallets are typically made of wood, plastic, or metal and are moved by forklift or pallet jack. In European freight traffic, the EUR pallet measuring 1,200 × 800 mm is predominant, while the 1,200 × 1,000 mm industrial pallet is also widely used. On bills of lading and packing lists, pallets are recorded as packages; under exchange pallet systems such as EPAL, the consignee is obliged to return an equivalent number of pallets in good condition. The term refers to the carrier itself, not to the goods loaded on it.
