When a warehouse receives hundreds of line items daily — individual pieces, inner packs, pallets — it needs a clear structure to assign every unit accurately to the correct order. A packaging unit system provides exactly that: products are grouped into hierarchical levels (each piece, inner carton, outer carton, pallet), with every level carrying a unique identifier such as an SSCC label or barcode. Within the warehouse management system (WMS), each unit is fully traceable from goods receipt through to delivery. Automated equipment — conveyors, sorters, pick-and-place systems — can only function reliably when this unit structure is consistently maintained. The concept also underpins EDI-based delivery call-offs and advance shipping notices (ASNs) exchanged with trading partners.
