Definition & Explanation
A packaging concept is the systematic specification of how a product is to be packaged for transport, storage, and handover — balancing protection requirements, transportability, stackability, cost, and sustainability. It defines material selection (cardboard, wood, plastic, composite materials), cushioning standards, unit dimensions, labelling, and handling instructions. In freight operations, the concept directly determines whether goods arrive undamaged, what volumetric freight charges apply, and whether regulatory requirements — for dangerous goods or cold-chain shipments, for instance — are satisfied. Recyclability and reusable packaging systems are increasingly built into the specification from the outset rather than added as an afterthought. A packaging concept should not be confused with packaging design, which addresses visual presentation for the end consumer; the concept focuses entirely on logistical and technical performance.
