The need-to-know principle limits access to sensitive information strictly to those individuals who require it to carry out a defined task. In logistics and supply chain management, it is typically enforced through role-based access controls (RBAC): a freight forwarder sees only their own shipment data, a customs broker receives the relevant declaration documents, and warehouse staff access only the inventory information pertaining to their area. This approach reduces the risk of data leaks and supports compliance with data protection legislation and export control regulations.
