Named perils coverage means a policy responds only to losses caused by hazards explicitly listed in the contract – if a loss arises from an unlisted event, no claim can be made. This contrasts with all-risk cover, where everything is covered unless expressly excluded and the insurer bears the burden of proof. In cargo insurance, typical named perils include fire, stranding, collision, theft, and breakage. Named perils policies are generally less expensive than all-risk, but require shippers and forwarders to review conditions carefully and ensure all material exposures are explicitly included. Under the Institute Cargo Clauses framework, ICC B and ICC C represent named perils forms.
